The Dobra has gone through several changes in its history, the most recent of which occurred in 2018 when the country initiated a currency reform, removing four zeros from the old Dobra. The current Dobra is abbreviated as STN, with the symbol for the currency being Db.

One Dobra is subdivided into 100 centavos, but due to inflation, the centavo is rarely used in practice. The Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe is responsible for issuing and regulating the currency.
